Organic
The Organic Section in the
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Division has extensive expertise in the preparation of
samples for analytical analysis of organic pollutants in air, water, soil, biota, and
plant tissue. To meet the growing need to characterize mixed waste and radioactive soil,
this laboratory is also dedicated to geophysical testing. The technical staff has more
than 15 years experience in the methods used for these analyses. All methods follow the
criteria set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (SW-846 and Contract Laboratory Protocol) methods. SwRI
maintains a Radioactive Material License that allows the geotechnical testing of
radioactive samples.

Technical strengths in the section include:
- Simultaneous extraction of over 150 extractions of more than
1,500 organic pollutants
- Geotechnical testing using methods for the Proctor test, particle
size determination, compressive strength, permeability, Atterberg limits, bulk density,
calcium carbonate, moisture analysis, pH, porosity, visual classification, expansion
index, and one-dimensional consolidation properties
